Capture your entire screen, a specific window, or a custom region with crystal-clear quality.

🖥️ Flexible Capture Modes

Cameo offers three capture modes to fit your needs: full screen for complete desktop capture, window mode for specific apps, and region selection for custom areas.

Capture Modes

Choose how you want to capture your screen:

Full Screen

Captures your entire display including all windows, desktop, and system UI. Perfect for comprehensive tutorials and demos.

Window

Captures a specific application window. Select from a list of open windows. Great for focused app demos.

Region

Draw a custom rectangle to capture any area of your screen. Drag corners to resize. Ideal for highlighting specific content.

Multi-Monitor Support

If you have multiple displays connected, you can choose which monitor to record. Select your preferred display from the dropdown menu before starting.

Select the frame rate for smooth video playback:

Quality

Choose the video bitrate that balances quality and file size:

Higher bitrate = better quality, larger file size

Cursor Options

Control how your mouse cursor appears in recordings:

When cursor is enabled, you can also add click effects to highlight mouse interactions. See cursor effects for customization options.

Recording Controls

Use these controls during your recording session:

  • Record — Start capturing your screen
  • Pause — Temporarily stop recording (resume anytime)
  • Stop — End recording and save the video
  • Cancel — Discard the current recording

Output Format

All recordings are saved as MP4 files with hardware-accelerated H.264 encoding:

Universal format, plays everywhere

Hardware acceleration via Metal (Mac) ensures fast encoding with minimal CPU usage.

Save Location

By default, recordings are saved to:

~/Movies/Cameo/

Screen Recording 2024-05-30T14-35-22.mp4

You can change the save location in preferences or choose a custom folder when stopping each recording.

Tips

  • Use Window mode when recording a single app to avoid capturing other windows
  • Choose 30 FPS for tutorials — it's smoother than you think and saves space
  • Select 60 FPS for gaming or fast-moving content
  • Use Region mode to crop out sensitive areas of your screen
  • Enable cursor with click effects to make tutorials easier to follow
  • Close unnecessary apps to improve recording performance
  • For long recordings, use Medium quality to balance quality and file size
